Course Objective
The course objective for Supervise Work in Confined Space Operation course as follows
Upon completion of this unit, learners will be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to perform the duties of a supervisor working in a Confined Space.
Learning Objectives
The objective of this training course for Supervise Work in Confined Space Operation is to enable participants to:
  • Identify and communicate the legal requirements on confined space work
  • Identify and explain the roles and responsibilities of all personnel working in a confined space
  • Apply appropriate means to communicate to workers on the legal requirements when working in a confined space
  • Identify types of confined space
  • Identify atmospheric hazards and their consequences
  • Identify physical and biological hazards and their consequences
  • Conduct a risk assessment
  • Implement control measures to eliminate various confined spaces hazards
  • Propose optimum and acceptable atmospheric conditions for safe entry and continual work in a confined space
  • Identify the elements of an effective confined space entry and how the elements of the programme relate to the various WSH regulations
  • Raise and comply with a Permit-to-Work system
  • Check to ensure that all workers are briefed on the Confined space Entry Permit
  • Terminate the entry permit upon completion of work
  • Apply gas detection instruments gas detection instruments in normal atmospheric condition and abnormal condition
  • Read and interpret results shown on gas testing and gas detection instruments
  • Identify the Limitations of Gas Detection Instruments
  • Conduct inspection to check that the workers identify, select and use the proper PPE for work/entry into confined space
  • Verify that correct procedures are used by the worker to identify, select, inspect and use respiratory protective equipment
  • Conduct inspection to fit check of air purifying respirators
  • Monitor PPE are properly prepared, stored and maintained.
  • Monitor respiratory protection equipment for use in confined space works are properly prepared, stored and maintained.
  • Communicate the Emergency Response Plan to workers in accordance with the organizational procedure
  • Activate rescue personnel in accordance with the Emergency Response Plan
  • Conduct inspection to ensure that workers wear full-body harness correctly when required
  • Conduct inspection on the correct use of self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
  • Operate communication devices
Initiate evacuation and self-rescue.

Entry Requirements
The entry requirements for Supervise Work in Confined Space Operation is as follows
  • Have completed the relevant safety training for a process plant (i.e., Perform Work in Confined Space Operation)
  • Be able to listen, read, speak and write English at a proficiency level equivalent to the Employability Skills System (ESS) level 5
Be able to manipulate numbers at a proficiency level equivalent to ESS level 5

  • CE5: Implement the safe use of personal protective equipment and respirator y protective equipment when working in a confined space
  • CE6: Assist in Implementing an Emergency Response Plan
